New curriculum transition regulations support smooth progress in studies
The purpose of the transition regulations is to ensure smooth study progress even when curriculum is revised during a student's studies. The new regulations apply to bachelor's and master's degree programmes. Any transition regulations concerning doctoral education will be communicated separately.
What does this change mean for students?
A curriculum defines, among other things, the structure of a degree programme and the courses included in it. In the future, each curriculum will remain in force for three academic years at a time.
Students start their studies according to the currently valid curriculum. If the curriculum changes during their studies, students may:
- transfer to the new degree structure in accordance with the transition rules, or
- continue their studies under the degree structure of the curriculum period they have started until the end of the transition period.
The purpose of the transition regulations is to ensure that students can complete their degrees even when curricula are updated.
How long are the transition periods?
Study modules, such as minor subjects
A study module may be completed according to the previous curriculum for one year after the end of the curriculum period.
For the 2027-2030 curricula, the transition period ends on 31 July 2031.
Bachelor's and master's degree programmes
A bachelor's or master's degree may be completed within a six-year transition period following the end of the curriculum period.
For the 2027-2030 curricula, the transition period ends on 31 July 2036.
The same principles will also be applied to curricula that were in force before 2027.
How will teaching be organised?
Teaching will always be delivered according to the currently valid curriculum. For this reason, degree programmes will prepare correspondence tables that enable students to check course and study module equivalencies between different curricula.
The first correspondence tables for the three-year curricula will be published in autumn 2029 on the student website and, where necessary, through the degree programmes' own communication channels.
The correspondence tables indicate which studies can be used to complete a degree. No separate recognition of prior learning application will be required when course equivalencies have been defined in the correspondence tables.
