New study: How do foreigners experience happiness in Finland?

A new study by researchers Mohsin Abdur Rehman (Doctoral Candidate) and Eeva-Liisa Oikarinen (Associate Professor) from the University of Oulu, along with Magnus Soderlund (Professor) from the Stockholm School of Economics, shows how happiness develops during a long stay abroad in Finland.

The research addresses a growing concern that many international students struggle to feel well and included during mobility periods. Happiness is shaped by the environment where experiences occur, including social life, culture, nature, and daily routines. When foreigners spend a longer time in a new place, these elements become more meaningful. The study reveals what helps international students feel welcome, safe, and satisfied with their lives in Finland.

The research followed students over time. It examines how happiness shifts from the excitement of arrival to later stages when real adaptation and challenges emerge. These individuals were students, yet also part-time travelers. Most studies focus on short holidays. Here, the journey lasted for months. This provides new insights into happiness beyond tourism and into everyday life in a new country.

Results show sources of happiness and ways to reduce stress

Different sources of happiness include friendships, exploring Finnish culture, enjoying nature, and gaining confidence through new experiences. Students emphasized that simple things like smooth services and friendly interactions with locals help reduce stress and build trust. Clean environments, quiet places, and safety are highly appreciated by these students.

The results offer practical guidance. They show how universities, tourism organizations, and public services can help visitors feel happier and more connected. By promoting inclusion and well-being, Finland enhances its reputation as an attractive study destination and international partner. Happiness becomes a long-term investment that benefits both international students and Finnish society.
