Opening of new physical modelling space

On 27 March, a new physical modelling space was opened to support validation of computational fluid dynamics simulations. The space provides a controlled environment for systematic investigation of single- and multiphase flow phenomena.

Facility features:

  • Two 1:5 scale physical models of AOD converters, equipped with tuyere-specific rotameters for gas flow control. One model is a vessel-in-box configuration for fluid mechanical measurements, while the other includes a dedicated support structure.
  • A 1:5 scale ladle model (vessel-in-box) with gas flow control via either a mass flow controller or a rotameter.
  • A box model for detailed study of gas injection with a single tuyere, with gas flow control via either a mass flow controller or a rotameter.

Measurement capabilities:

  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
  • High-speed imaging
  • Configurable camera mountings (top, side, and bottom views)
  • Tracer-based mixing time measurements
  • Vibration and torque measurements

The launch brought together around 25 visitors from both the University of Oulu and industry. Cakes from a local bakery were served alongside coffee and refreshments. The inaugural gas injection was initiated by Senior R&D Engineer Outi Mure from Outokumpu, who opened the gas valve.
