Scientific publishing activity strengthened at the University of Oulu

The scientific publishing activity of researchers at the University of Oulu has strengthened for the second consecutive year, and in the latest statistics, the second most among Finnish universities. This is evident from a comparison that examines the score produced by universities' publishing activities in the funding model of the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

“Our publications reveal new knowledge that our researchers have produced and presented to the scientific community,” says Taina Pihlajaniemi, Vice Rector for Research at the University of Oulu.

“Thanks to our entire research staff for active publishing.”

The score accumulating towards base funding includes peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed scientific publications, as well as popular publications aimed at professional communities and the general public.

The open access of peer-reviewed publications increases the accumulated score by 1.2 times. Of the University of Oulu's peer-reviewed publications in 2024, 87 percent are openly accessible, which is the third best openness percentage among Finnish universities.

14 percent of the universities' basic funding is based on publications. Acquired research funding also plays a significant role. In total, 37 percent of the base funding is distributed according to research indicators. The remaining portion is determined by various education indicators and educational and scientific policy goals.

The state funding granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture to the University of Oulu this year is approximately 200 million euros.
