Professor Iman Harymawan serves as the Head of the Center for Environmental, Social, and Governance Studies (CESGS) and the Director of the Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE) at University of Airlangga, and his research explores themes that include sustainability, corporate governance, and responsible business.

Professor Harymawan’s 2-week visit, hosted by Professor Satu Nätti, featured a diverse programme including meeting OBS management and research groups, visiting the LeaF laboratory, joining and presenting in seminars as well as giving a sustainability‑focused guest lecture to students in the international bachelor programme. He appreciated the students’ engagement and eagerness to discuss, as well as OBS’ low-hierarchy atmosphere.

Closer academic-industry collaboration for shared solutions

Professor Harymawan’s interest in sustainability research stems from a concern for future generations and a drive to find shared solutions to sustainability issues. He sees academic–industry partnerships important for societal impact and something worth exploring further in research. Closer collaboration is needed to help address concrete sustainability challenges that businesses face globally:

“In my view, our work places a strong emphasis on industrialization. We need to find a balance between what we consume today and what we leave for the next generation”, he adds.

During his seminar discussion, Professor Harymawan shared current sustainability challenges Indonesia faces. Although sustainability innovations receive limited funding, pressure for change is increasing, particularly from international companies seeking transparent supply chains.

New international initiatives

During the visit, concrete plans for future collaboration between OBS and University of Airlangga were developed: a Team Finland Knowledge proposal on corporate reporting, and a multi‑university project aimed at supporting Indonesian higher education institutions in developing sustainability strategies. Both professors see strong prospects for continued collaboration on sustainability.

“It was a great privilege to host Iman. We are excited to launch a very interesting collaboration, and his visit taught us a lot about a particularly interesting region, Indonesia”, Satu Nätti adds.
