Two new UArctic Thematic Networks hosted by the University of Oulu focus on Arctic water and natural hydrogen
The University of the Arctic (UArctic) functions through its Thematic Networks. Currently over seventy Thematic Networks and Institutes engage in scientific research, education, networking, and outreach activities across the Circumpolar North. The University of Oulu, one of UArctic’s founding members, leads currently 10 Thematic Networks and participates in 19 others.
Arctic Water Network strengthens collaboration on Arctic water research
The Arctic Water Network (ArcticWater) connects researchers, stakeholders, authorities, and operators to improve how Arctic water systems are observed, modelled, and co-managed under rapid climate change.
The network focuses on hydrological processes and Arctic water resource management—from source to sea —with an emphasis on Arctic hydrology, biogeochemistry, carbon, greenhouse gases and risk-informed decision support.
The lead of the ArcticWater, Hannu Marttila, Professor in Hydrology and Water Quality at University of Oulu says: "Water is central to many environmental and societal changes in the Arctic. ArcticWater brings together expertise to better understand these changes and support sustainable water management."
The main objective of ArcticWater is to build a collaborative network that increases the visibility and impact of Arctic water research while supporting evidence-based decision-making. Professor Hannu Marttila highlights the importance of collaboration:
"The strength of UArctic lies in its ability to connect expertise across the Circumpolar North. By linking research, education, observations and local knowledge across countries, ArcticWater can achieve far more than individual institutions working separately and provide a foundation for long-term international collaboration."
Natural Hydrogen Network supports emerging research field
The Thematic Network on Natural Hydrogen integrates expertise in geology, geochemistry, microbiology, and ecology, to study both geological and biological sources of hydrogen, their interactions, and their relevance for the green energy transition.
The lead of the Thematic Network on Natural Hydrogen, Associate Professor Tero Luukkonen says: “Natural hydrogen is an emerging clean energy resource with potentially revolutionary impacts. Important discovery has been made recently in Saskatchewan, Canada, which demonstrates the importance of research in Arctic areas.”
The overall goal of the network is to support collaboration in terms of research, funding application, education, and increasing general awareness on the topic. The network also aims to set up dialogue with local communities to support just development of this emerging hydrogen source.
Associate Professor Tero Luukkonen adds: “Natural hydrogen research requires international efforts and the UArctic network on natural hydrogen brings together key researchers to progress its research and exploration in sustainable manner.”
