The University of Oulu–coordinated Art of Darkness project is featured at the New European Bauhaus (NEB) Festival, which opens today in Brussels

The international project Art of Darkness, coordinated by the Oulu School of Architecture at the University of Oulu, will present its results at the NEBULE booth (stand 18) in the Fair section of the NEB Festival. At the NEBULE stand, ten Horizon Europe funded projects will share their concepts, methods and experiences related to the co-creation of cultural heritage.

The Art of Darkness as Cultural Heritage of Urban Landscape project (https://artofdarkness.eu/) explores the role of darkness as part of cultural heritage sites. Launched in early 2025, the research project brings together researchers, cities, and creative professionals from across Europe. Over its three-year duration, the project will implement five artistic pilot experiments through co-creation at cultural heritage sites in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, and Italy. Based on these experiments, the project will develop operational models for lighting design in culturally valuable contexts.

In Finland, the pilot – the Art of Darkness light art trail and a platform for darkness-sensitive light art – will be carried out in Pikisaari, Oulu. The City of Oulu and the Finnish Light Art Society FLASH are partners of the University of Oulu in implementing the pilot.
