The University of Oulu is evaluating the future of its student information system
The University of Oulu is evaluating the future of its student information system as part of the long-term development of educational services. The University's current student information system is Peppi. The review examines future alternatives to the current solution and assesses two system options: the SaaS-based version of the current Peppi system and the Sisu system. No decision regarding the future system has yet been made.
The review process was launched in spring 2025 as part of the University's objective to transition from the current locally hosted student information system to a SaaS cloud service. The initiative is driven by goals to improve system maintainability, reduce the impact of service interruptions caused by version upgrades, and further enhance the smoothness of studying and administrative work in the coming years. Students' perspectives are being considered in cooperation with the Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY).
The review evaluates the functionality of the systems and their impact on the University's services, users, and processes. In addition, it examines how the alternatives support study planning, other student services, and the long-term development of digital services.
What does this mean for students?
At this stage, students do not need to take any action.
The review process will not result in any immediate changes to the use of Peppi, the completion of studies, or students' day-to-day services.
No decision has been made yet
The University is assessing several factors, including system functionality, the impact of implementation, costs, resource requirements, and compatibility with other services. A final decision will be made based on an overall evaluation during the latter part of 2026. No decision regarding a system change has yet been made.
Any changes would be implemented at a later stage
If the University decides in the future to replace the current Peppi system with another solution, any changes would be implemented gradually over several years. If a system renewal is approved, the earliest possible implementation according to the current preliminary plans would be during 2028–2029. Students will be informed well in advance of any potential changes, and guidance and support will be provided during the implementation process.
The University will provide updates on the progress of the review and any decisions as they are made.
