Project description

INSIDE:INSIGHT is a European Doctoral Network funded by the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions program. It brings together 12 partners from 9 countries across Europe, Canada, and New Zealand. The project aims to improve how future healthcare professionals are educated by developing and studying technology-enhanced learning (TEL) methods, such as virtual, augmented, and extended reality (VR/AR/XR). These tools can make learning more interactive and realistic, helping students understand complex medical concepts and practice safely in simulated environments.

The project responds to Europe’s growing need for skilled healthcare workers and the challenges faced by traditional education, such as large class sizes, limited resources, and gaps in digital skills. INSIDE:INSIGHT will explore how digital technologies can enhance learning, motivation, and collaboration in medical education. It will also provide evidence and guidelines on how to effectively integrate these tools into teaching in a way that supports inclusivity and high-quality learning experiences.

Within the INSIDE:INSIGHT network, the University of Oulu leads a project focused on developing a self- and socially shared learning theory-based pedagogical model using XR simulations to enhance interprofessional collaboration between nursing and medical students. It explores how XR can support self- and socially shared regulation of learning, teamwork, communication, and stress management through multimodal data analysis. This doctoral training focuses on collecting and analyzing multimodal data, communicating results, and identifying policy improvements in digital health education.
