Project description

Oral diseases have significant impact on general health, quality of life and well-being. There are inequalities in oral healthcare globally due to lack of resources, high costs and geographical barriers. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate solutions that can reinforce disease prevention being resource efficient and widely accessible. The research project aims to validate and implement artificial intelligence methodologies which predict and detect the most common dental diseases. To achieve this, an approach using powerful state-of-the art deep learning (DL) methods utilising dental images produced from smartphone, is proposed. The vision of this project is to develop machine learning models that can provide automated and effective support solutions for remote diagnosis of dental diseases using dental images and oral health-related questionnaires. The visioned solution can support global efforts on preventing oral diseases.
