Project description
The project aims to create, describe and implement indicators that will help monitor the impacts of climate change and climate action on 1) the environment of the Saami homeland, especially reindeer herding, 2) the climate of the Saami homeland, 3) the practice of traditional Saami livelihoods, 4) the health and well-being of the Saami, 5) the Saami population, 6) the green transition and climate justice. The project will develop a more detailed content of the indicators, a description of the data, resources, an indicator update cycle and analysis.
The project's data will be based on the Saami Climate Council's knowledge base, workshops organised for Saami traditional knowledge holders and other knowledge bases concerning the Saami.
The project results are:
- Indicators for monitoring the impacts of climate change on Saami culture, Saami people, the environment and conditions of the Saami homeland, reindeer herding and for assessing the fairness of climate action
- Analysis of the impacts and progress of climate change using indicators
- A proposal for regular monitoring of the impacts of climate change on Saami culture and conditions of the Saami homeland.
The project results will be used to monitor the impacts of climate change, monitor the impacts of climate action and develop climate action. The project results, i.e. indicators, will be used in the work of the Saami Climate Council.
The project is implemented in cooperation with the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the University of Eastern Finland and the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare.
