Strengthening learners’ meta-skills in the AI age – a new tool for teachers

The learning meta-skills toolkit, developed as part of a proof-of-concept project funded by the Research Council of Finland, provides teachers with practical tools to identify when and how to support students in building their meta-skills. It also introduces a new dimension to assessment by focusing on the learning process in addition to outcomes. The toolkit will be tested in school environments and made openly available.

Project description

We are developing an innovative toolkit that helps teachers support students’ meta-skills in collaborative learning. Meta-skills—such as the ability to learn, adapt, and regulate emotions, motivation, and cognition—are essential for success in the age of artificial intelligence.

The meta-skills toolkit includes practical tools that enable teachers to recognize when and how to guide students more effectively. It also supports the assessment of learning by focusing on processes in addition to outcomes. Developed and tested in school environments, the toolkit will be openly available, promoting its widespread use.

Our project aims to strengthen the quality of education at both national and international levels. The meta-skills toolkit not only supports teaching, but also has the potential to influence education policy and create new business opportunities.
