Research group description
The Environmental Citizen Science Research Group brings together ecological research, biodiversity studies, and citizen science to advance our understanding of the natural environment and the relationships between nature and society. Our research focuses on biodiversity documentation and monitoring, the ecological impacts of environmental change, and the development of participatory approaches to environmental research. We are particularly interested in exploring how citizen science can contribute to scientific knowledge production, environmental awareness, and social inclusion. Another important research direction is the impact of artificial light at night on biodiversity and ecosystems.
Our work combines traditional botanical and ecological research methods with innovative citizen science approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration. We aim to strengthen connections between researchers and society, create opportunities for diverse communities to participate in environmental research, and contribute to biodiversity conservation and sustainable environmental management.
Our current project "Nature Welcomes All", funded by Kone Foundation, explores how nature-based engagement and citizen science can support the integration of refugees and other newcomers in Finland while contributing to biodiversity documentation and scientific knowledge.
The group welcomes collaboration with researchers, institutions, and organisations in Finland and internationally.
