Research group description
Geotechnical Laboratory operates under the Civil Engineering research unit in the premises of University of Oulu. The laboratory performs geotechnical and water engineering related laboratory experiments:
Grain size distribution (dry sieving, wet sieving, hydrometer analysis)
Organic matter content (Loss on ignition, LOI) (peat samples)
Humus content, Organic content (clay and silt samples)
Specific gravity of solids (fine-grained samples)
Specific gravity of solids (coarse-grained samples)
Water content (oven-drying method, 20–150°C)
Compaction (Standard and Modified Proctor test, ICT compaction test)
Plasticity (Casagrande liquid limit device, plastic limit rolling test)
Hydraulic conductivity (rigid-wall and flexible-wall permeameter testing)
Capillarity (capillary meter)
Frost susceptibility (frost heave testing apparatus)
Shear strength (triaxial test, direct shear test, fall cone test)
Compressibility, Consolidation (manual and automated oedometer apparatus)
Swelling potential (swelling test apparatus)
Thermal conductivity (thermal probe method)
Isotope measurement
Water retention capacity (pF apparatus)
Rheological properties (rheometer, slump test)
Environmental conditioning testing (climate chamber / environmental chamber)
Leachability, Solubility testing (column tests, shaking apparatus)
