Babak Maboudi Afkham is an Assistant Professor in the Inverse Problems group within the Research Unit of Mathematical Sciences. His research lies at the intersection of uncertainty quantification, inverse problems, statistical analysis, machine learning, and numerical methods for partial differential equations. He focuses on developing theoretical and computational tools for mitigating uncertainty in inverse problems, with applications in fields such as medical imaging, environmental science, and renewable energy. His work bridges rigorous mathematical theory and practical implementation, aiming to make advanced mathematical tools accessible to engineers and applied scientists. Babak is committed to the democratization of mathematics, ensuring that cutting-edge advances in modeling and scientific computing have real-world impact. He is a Research Council of Finland Fellow (2025–2029), a member of the FAME Flagship (2024–2031), and part of the Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging.
