Elias Rossinen is a doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Science at the University of Oulu. His research focuses on the growth of tourism in Arctic national parks, the phenomena of overtourism, and the resilience of tourism destinations. Drawing on the theories of degrowth, political ecology, and social constructionism, his work examines how tourism growth affects the ecological sustainability of Arctic national parks and tourism destinations, as well as regional governance, infrastructure, and the social capacity of local communities.
Rossinen applies interdisciplinary methods to analyse the social carrying capacity of tourism, social resilience, and socio-ecological impacts, as well as the mechanisms through which Arctic protected areas can maintain their ecological functioning amid increasing tourism. His research aims to produce knowledge that supports sustainable decision-making, long-term planning of protected areas, and the management of the impacts of overtourism.
