Elina Kylmäoja
PhD
University Teacher
I am a researcher and university teacher specialized in bone and biomaterial research. My research focuses on bone cell biology and differentiation, as well as interactions between bone cells and biomaterials. My aim is to understand the cellular-level mechanisms that regulate bone resorption, implant osseointegration, and the formation of foreign body reaction. I am particularly interested in how local biological factors and material properties direct the differentiation and function of osteoclasts and foreign body giant cells. My research provides new insights into the differences between these two closely related yet biologically distinct cell types and into how their specific properties can be exploited in the development of biomaterials and bone tissue repair.
I have extensive and long-standing experience in cell culture techniques and in studying cell structure, differentiation, and function using experimental biomedical models. I work as a university teacher in anatomy and cell biology courses, and my teaching focuses especially on histology, where the structure and function of cells and tissues are examined as part of the biological organization of the whole organism.
