Environmental humanities and critical extinction studies

History, Culture and Communication Studies
Faculty of Humanities

I am a researcher in the environmental humanities with a background in comparative literary and cultural studies. My academic work is on the socio-cultural side of extinction: what makes people care and what stories do they tell about biodiversity loss?

My postdoctoral research at Oulu University looks at practices and imaginaries of gathering, archiving and the sharing of edible plants and their seeds (seed saving) as a means of safeguarding biodiversity and preventing plant species loss. Before that, my PhD research focused on insect decline, storytelling and engagement, and questions of care and (in)attention when it comes to wildlife extinction.
