Dr. Hannu-Pekka Komsa is Associate Professor (Tenure Track, started in 2020) in computational physics and nanomaterials. His research aims to advance the understanding of how the properties of materials can be tuned by modifying their structure at the nanoscale using atomic-level simulations (based on both quantum chemistry and machine learning), with a particular focus on 2D materials and crystal defects. Applications include ultrathin (opto-)electronics, smart sensors, and neuromorphic computing. Another main theme is modeling the materials’ response to external stimuli such as light or electron irradiation, to aid in material characterization by experimental techniques such as electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.
