Janne Kananen holds a Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering and a Doctor of Medical Sciences from the University of Oulu, including an MD and PhD. While Janne is a specialist in clinical neurophysiology, his focus lies in research supported by the Research Council of Finland, where he explores how sleep apnea affects brain health and overall physiology. Additionally, he advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to neurological disorders. In addition to his academic work at the University of Oulu, Janne is dedicated to advancing the intersection of medicine and technology, aiming to integrate his expertise to drive innovation in neuroscience and computational medicine.

His research focuses on various brain diseases, with a particular emphasis on physiological brain activity in different states, such as sleep apnea, epilepsy, sleep, narcolepsy and dementia. The primary goal of this research is to understand baseline brain activity, which will aid in the development of more sensitive and specific disease markers and treatments.

For his research, Janne utilizes advanced imaging techniques, including fast functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) known as Magnetic Resonance Encephalography (MREG), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and electroencephalography (EEG) in novel multimodal scanning environments.
