Ikkala defended 2023 with the topic "Airborne Remote Sensing as a Tool for Monitoring Topographical and Hydrological Changes on Northern Degraded and Restored Peatlands". Thereafter, he has worked as a postdoc researcher. From the beginning of 2024 Ikkala started as a Senior Researcher at the Geological Survey of Finland in the group "Peatland use and resource economics". He continues as a visiting researcher in the University of Oulu.
