                                    Professor Emeritus Markku Oivo (PhD, eMBA) has over 40 years of research, R&D, and management experience in both academia and industry in Finland, the US, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. He was head of the M3S research unit at the University of Oulu until March 2024. Since May 2024, he has served as a Distinguished Advisor at Dimecc Ltd and has held an honorary professorship at the Nanjing Institute of Technology since 2017.
From 2000 to 2002, he was Vice President and Director of R&D at Solid Co. Between 1986 and 2000, he held several positions at VTT. He has also held visiting positions at the University of Maryland (1990-91), Schlumberger Ltd. in Paris (1994-95), Fraunhofer IESE (1999-2000), the University of Bolzano (2014-15), and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (2015). Additionally, he worked at Kone Co. from 1982 to 1986.
In 2013, he was awarded the honor of First Class Knight of the White Rose of Finland. Professor Oivo is a founding member and was chair of the steering committee of ISERN. He has initiated and managed over 100 national and international research projects and programs, securing tens of millions of Euros in funding. He has served as chair and committee member for numerous international conferences and has been a reviewer for top scientific journals.
