Portrait of Salla Kangas, a dark-haired woman wearing a green shirt, smiling warmly while standing on a stairway. The setting is bright and professional.

I am the coordinator of the Oulu Brain & Mind Network and a research scientist specializing in in vitro disease modeling of childhood-onset rare neurological disorders.

I work in Pediatric Neurology research group and my current research focuses on neurodevelopmental conditions that present as white matter disorders and epilepsy. We utilize induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-based models and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to generate brain organoids and 2D cell culture systems, enabling us to investigate the cellular pathophysiology of novel disease-causing gene variants in brain specific cell types.

Our work is highly translational, combining experimental findings with clinical data through strong collaboration between clinicians and basic researchers.
