Sumit Ghosh, Senior Researcher (equivalent to Associate Professor) and Adjunct Professor (Docent), Department of Materials and Mechanical Engineering (MME), University of Oulu, Finland, has over 13 years of R&D experience in microstructure engineering, fatigue/fracture behavior, computational materials science and damage micro-mechanisms in both bulk and additively manufactured materials. He is principal investigator (PI) of major EU-funded projects in the thematic area of "Mitigating climate change”. The grants include European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant 2025 (NewGenH2Steel, € 1.5 Million) Prestigious ERC funding for Sumit Ghosh's research on sustainable ultrahigh strength steels and lightweight steel structures to transform energy, automotive, and defence industries, Kvantum Institute Grant (Green4Gtech, € 700,000) https://www.oulu.fi/en/projects/green-transition-through-4th-generation-steels-innovations-and-clean-technology, University of Oulu Matching Grant (€ 400,000), H2FUTURE NRI Grant (ECHOSAFE, € 50,000) https://www.oulu.fi/en/news/h2futures-nri-2026-2027-projects-have-been-selected-funding-for-wireless-sensors-using-mm-wave-green, University of Oulu International Strategic Partnership Development Grant (€ 10,000), University of Oulu Incentive Grant (€ 30,000). He is leading Metal Fatigue research group at Materials and Mechanical Engineering, University of Oulu. His group integrates multiscale experimental and computational approaches to advance the understanding of fatigue related problems in high/ultrahigh strength multiphase steels. His international collaborations span Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Germany), IMDEA (Spain), BOKU University (Austria), TU Delft (Netherlands), Kyushu university (Japan), IITs (India) and he worked with various EU/Academy projects. Presently, Sumit Ghosh supervising/co-supervising four doctoral (PhD) researchers and two post-doctoral researchers and a total of 10-11 reserchers (PhD and Post-docs) will be working in the Fatigue research group in spring of 2026, with the goal of becoming a leading hub for fatigue research in both academic and industrial domains.
