Medical Imaging Teaching and Test Laboratory (Mittlab)

Mittlab offers wide selection of tools for teaching, research, product development, innovation and testing in the field of medical imaging. Laboratory was established in a European regional development fund project in 2021 and it is part of OuluHealth Labs -environment.

Laboratory

Mittlab is a medical imaging teaching and test laboratory, that is dedicated to teaching, research, product development, innovation and testing activities. Mittlab strengthens Oulu’s position nationally by providing a single infrastructure that serves the needs of research, education and companies in a versatile manner. Laboratory was established in a European regional development fund project in 2021 and it is located at Oulu University Hospital, but the virtual elements of the laboratory will be freely available for stakeholders worldwide.

The laboratory’s physical and virtual equipment can be used to improve education in biomedical engineering, medical physics, radiation protection and in the training of radiographers. Laboratory offers also an opportunity for research institutes and medical imaging companies to advance their research and products by allowing testing in facilities similar to a hospital environment. This can help the commercialization of products and prototypes.

Laboratory’s physical components include a radiography, mammography, cone-beam CT system, conventional CT system, a set of phantoms and radiation dose meters, of which some are purchased and some donated by Oulu University Hospital. Additionally, an experimental x-ray tomography imaging system and a linear accelerator are available for laboratory users.

Virtual components of the laboratory include 360°-virtual simulation environments of imaging suites and virtualized imaging device interfaces (MRI, CT and radiography) , which all help students to understand the imaging environments, device operation and the underlying physical phenomena behind different imaging modalities.
