Integra – Institute for Integrative Studies

Teamwork makes the dream work. The most significant challenges of our time do not follow disciplinary boundaries, nor can they be solved alone. The University of Oulu's Institute for Integrative Studies, Integra, brings together researchers, students, and interest holders from across society to build new understanding and develop solutions to local and global challenges. Integra welcomes everyone who wants to be part of the solution. Together with the University of Oulu’s diverse research environments, Integra provides a unique platform for developing, testing, and implementing new ideas, methods, and solutions in collaboration with a wide range of societal partners.

Institute for Integrative Studies

Integra envisions a new way of advancing research, education, and societal engagement. The institute strengthens the University of Oulu’s position as an international leader in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research while fostering research initiatives that transcend traditional disciplinary and organisational boundaries. Its goal is to generate impactful knowledge and solutions that promote sustainable well-being, competitiveness, and society’s capacity for renewal.

Integra will officially launch its operations on 1 January 2027. The institute will be responsible for initiating and steering the University of Oulu’s strategic research themes and project funding opportunities, and we will launch a series of workshops to develop these activities collaboratively already in autumn 2026. Join us in shaping the future of Integra.

We warmly welcome you to the events of autumn 2026 and spring 2027 and invite you to help build UniOulu Science Day, the university’s largest interdisciplinary event. The call for workshop proposals will open soon, and we look forward to receiving bold and innovative ideas from across the entire university community.
