The course will discuss and introduce the basic physical phenomena behind organic field effect transistors. Estimated course extend: 2 ECTS credits.

  • Charge transport in organic semiconductors
    • Disordered organic materials
    • Multiple-trapping and retrapping
    • Percolation
  • Effect of contacts on organic semiconductors
    • Vacuum level shift
    • Controlling the work function
  • Basic operation behind organic thin-film transistors
    • Estimation of various parameters in OFETs
  • Influence of gate dielectric on OFETs
    • Dipolar broadening
    • Tuning of the turn-on voltage by self assembled monolayers
  • Low-voltage operation
    • Thin dielectrics
    • Ion-modulated transistors
  • Ambipolar transport
  • Light-emitting FETs

Lecturer’s short bio

Ronald Österbacka (MSc 1995, DPhil 1999) is professor of physics at Åbo Akademi University. He chairs the CoE in Functional Materials. His research interests are electro-optical properties of disordered organic materials with special reference to Organic Electronics. Österbacka is a member of the Finnish Society for Science and Letters as well as in the Svenska Tekniska Vetenskapsakademien i Finland. Österbacka has three patent families assigned to his name, and has published more than 140 papers and book-chapters in peer review scientific journals.
