Abstract: Sustainable development and climate change form one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. Despite significant progress, large streams of material and energy remain partly or completely unutilized in the metallurgical industry. These include slags, scale and waste heat as well as process waters. New technology, physico-chemical data and operating approaches are required to obtain practical implementations that are viable also in economic terms.

The ambition of the SYMMET project is to facilitate the improvement of material and energy efficiency in the materials production, recycling and reuse in the metals manufacturing ecosystem. Furthermore, the consortium aims to promote creation of research-based innovations and creation of new business in the ecosystem. The research tasks are divided to four technology teams (TT):
TT1 – Secondary raw materials and refractories
TT2 – Closing the material and energy loops
TT3 – Renewable energy sources and non-fossil reductants, and
TT4 – Treatment of rejects.

The SYMMET project moves the Finnish metals industry towards the concept of circular economy and thereby strives for reduced use of new materials, high degree of reuse and recycling of materials, and ultimately a zero waste future. The project also contributes to securing cost competitiveness of metal production, creates new opportunities for international market entry of SMEs, and promotes the strategic renewal of the metals ecosystem by training new research professionals.

Total budget: 6.9 M€ (UO 1.93M€ for 4 research units in University of Oulu)
