Going beyond borders

One of the biggest decisions we can ever make as individuals is choosing change over mediocrity - exploring what life has to offer beyond our comfort zones. This, to me, is what being an international student means.

It is more than just the academic or career upgrade, but it focuses more on refining one’s character - acknowledging the fear and uncertainty that go with building a life abroad and transforming that fear into the fuel that propels you towards your limitless potential.

Finally reached the University of Oulu!

Taking the leap of faith: my path to the University of Oulu

“Can I really make it? What if I do not have what it takes to be selected for the degree I want? What if Finland is not for me? Can I still study and work at the same time? How would I sustain my needs? Can I manage being away from my family? What if I just stay in the Philippines?” These were just a few of the questions my mind wrestled with before handing over my application to the Master’s Programme in Business Analytics at the Oulu Business School.

Was I scared? Absolutely. Were there many uncertainties? Without a doubt. But I wouldn’t have known the answers to my questions unless I tried.

After months of waiting, the moment I had been waiting for finally arrived – an offer of admission from the University of Oulu, accompanied by an unexpected and humbling surprise: a scholarship. Although I had several offers from different universities across Europe, I chose the University of Oulu because of its strong focus on practical learning and its supportive, close-knit community. I knew it was the place where I could grow both academically and personally.

That acceptance didn’t just mark the start of a new academic journey; it was the beginning of stepping into a world entirely different from what I had always known.

Stepping into a new world: first impressions of Finland

From an average temperature of thirty-five to thirty-eight degrees Celsius in the Philippines, Oulu welcomed me with a brisk seven-degree summer day. From a tropical country to arctic weather - really quick. When I stepped out of the airport, I suddenly felt the city’s calmness and serene spirit. There was no traffic, no loud or chaotic noise. It was just beautifully peaceful.

Oulu has a breathtaking blend of modern and contemporary architecture, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes that are both rich and accessible. Imagine being in the city center, just a few steps away from vibrant parks and gentle rivers – a dream come true, indeed.

Coming from a background where I often heard that Finns have a reserved demeanor, I was pleasantly amazed by their warmth and authenticity. A sincere “kiitos” (“thank you”) from passengers to bus captains at each stop shows how deeply respect, humility, and equality are woven into the Finnish culture. Seeing lots of families spend time together – celebrating normal days in restaurants or strolling with their dogs in the park – revealed to me the importance of Finns place on family, connection, and balance.

These early experiences made me realize that stepping into a new world isn’t just about adapting to a different climate or culture – it’s about opening yourself up to new learnings and perspectives on life and community.

Learning beyond the classroom: the UniOulu way

The University of Oulu has introduced me to a new and fascinating way of learning — one that goes beyond academics and extends to personal growth.

As I adapt to new study methods, I’ve discovered a healthy balance between independence and collaboration through self-paced individual tasks and engaging group assignments.

These experiences have helped me strengthen my time management, interpersonal, and communication skills. They’ve also allowed me to grow in confidence — not by competing with others, but by learning alongside them. Here, education isn’t just about performance; it’s about progress. And with that, “learning and growing together” has become my guiding motto.

Beyond academics, I’ve also found friendship and belonging. My newfound friends have made life in Oulu feel warmer and more familiar. The University also introduced me to the Kummi Family Programme, which connected me with a local Finnish family. They have been incredibly kind, guiding me and helping me experience Finnish culture firsthand. This immersive experience made me feel supported and cared for, even thousands of miles away from the Philippines, turning Oulu into a city that truly feels like home.

Going beyond borders: a continuous journey ahead

In this journey, I am blessed to have my family as my greatest support system. My husband never fails to remind me that there’s nothing I cannot do as long as I believe in myself. The University of Oulu has also been a true partner since day one — guiding me through webinars, practical tips, and the student tutor program that made settling in so much easier.

It’s only been nearly three months since I arrived in Oulu, yet it already feels home — a testament that I made the right decision. It’s also a gentle reminder to never stop discovering who you are and what the world has to offer beyond borders.

Nothing comes easy; everything worthwhile requires effort. You may not have it all figured out at first, and that’s perfectly fine. Life has its own way of unfolding. What matters is that you take that leap of faith, stay kind to yourself, and even in the presence of fear — do it anyway.
