Catholijn Jonker
Prof. dr. Catholijn Jonker is professor in Artificial Intelligence at TU Delft and Leiden University. She is president of ICT Platform of the Netherlands, board member of the Centre for Bold Cities, principal investigator of the Amsterdam Institute of Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS), board member of IFAAMAS, and vice-coordinator of the Hybrid Intelligence Centre. She is a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, a Fellow of EurAI, and member of the Academia Europaea. She is a knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

Timo Aila
Timo Aila works as a Senior Distinguished Research Scientist at NVIDIA. He has had two research careers, first in computer graphics and currently in machine learning.
In computer graphics, his contributions have been used in computer games (Max Payne), game tech (Umbra), and movies (Avatar, Tintin, Hobbit). He was the first chief architect of NVIDIA’s ray tracing hardware units in RTX.
In machine learning, he is best known for his work on generative modelling, particularly the StyleGAN family of image generators. He currently works on diffusion models and tries to gain a deeper understanding of generative AI. He has several best paper mentions from major conferences such as CVPR and NeurIPS.

Lauri Lovén
Lauri Lovén, D.Sc.(Tech), is a senior member of IEEE and the coordinator of the Distributed Intelligence strategic research area in the 6G Flagship research program, at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP), University of Oulu, in Finland. He received his D.Sc. at the university of Oulu in 2021, was with the Distributed Systems Group, TU Wien in 2022, and visited the Integrated Systems Laboratory at the ETH Zürich in 2023. His current research concentrates on edge intelligence, and on the orchestration of resources as well as distributed learning and decision-making in the computing continuum. He has co-authored 2 patents and ca. 40 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and workshops.

Steven LaValle
Steven M. LaValle is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, in Particular Robotics and Virtual Reality, at the University of Oulu, Finland. Since 2001, he has been a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois. He has also held positions at Stanford University and Iowa State University. His research interests include robotics, virtual reality, sensor fusion, planning algorithms, computational geometry, and control theory. In research, he is mostly known for his introduction of the Rapidly exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm, which is widely used in robotics and other engineering fields. He also authored the books Planning Algorithms, Sensing and Filtering, and Virtual Reality. He currently leads the ERC AdG project, "Foundations of Perception Engineering".

With regard to industry, he was an early founder and chief scientist of Oculus VR, acquired by Facebook for $3 billion in 2014, where he developed patented tracking technology for consumer virtual reality and led a team of perceptual psychologists to provide principled approaches to virtual reality system calibration, health and safety, and the design of comfortable user experiences. From 2016 to 2017, he was a Vice President and Chief Scientist of VR/AR/MR at Huawei Technologies, where he was a leader in mobile product development on a global scale. He has served as an angel investor or adviser to many successful technology startups over the past decade.

Koen Hindriks
Koen Hindriks is head of the Social AI group at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a co-founder of the startup Interactive Robotics. He also co-chairs the Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence in The Netherlands. In his Social AI Lab he investigates how to improve the way robots understand people and how to make robots interact socially with people. His work has focused on the development of socially assistive robotics in diverse domains such as education, healthcare and retail.

Atte Oksanen
Atte Oksanen is professor of social psychology at the Tampere University and the leader of Emerging Technologies Lab. Oksanen’s research focuses on emerging technologies, social interaction and deviant behavior online. Oksanen has led major cross-national projects over his career and his recent research projects investigate the increasing role of intelligent technologies in everyday life.

Jussi Lahtinen
Jussi Lahtinen is an artist (AMK) in Urban AI project, who works with AI and has developed a brand called Metropolis by Jussi Lahtinen (www.urbanai.fi, www.jussilahtinen.fi)

If you’re a student (of any level), you can gain 2 credits from the event. You gain 2 credits by submitting a short report (2-4 pages) summarizing minimum 4 talks, posters, or demos you found engaging and your own thoughts based on the research questions presented. Presenting a poster covers half of the written requirements. The credits are graded pass/fail. To gain the credits, submit your report to ella.peltonen@oulu.fi together with your student number latest at 30.11.2023. There is no need to register for the credits (but you need to register for the event). Please note that if you got these credits from the first Arctic AI event, you cannot have them second time.
