Location
Researchers’ Night invites people of all ages to discover the world of science. This multidisciplinary family event offers the opportunity to meet researchers, hear about their work and gain a better understanding of how science influences our everyday lives.
Researchers’ Night is part of a Europe-wide science event and Finland’s largest celebration of science, held annually on the last Friday of September.
In 2026, the event will be held at the University of Oulu for the ninth time. It is also part of the diverse Oulu2026 cultural programme organised by the University of Oulu.
Programme at the Botanical Garden – Cassiopeia Included!
Welcome to the Botanical Garden of the University of Oulu!
Our greenhouses, Romeo and Juliet, are open to the public. The experts from the Botanical Garden will be on hand to answer questions. Botanical Garden, Kaitoväylä 5.
Harmonia
The University of Oulu’s mixed choir Cassiopeia brings together an interest in music, nature and science in the Harmonia soundscape. Harmonia is largely based on improvisation, but also incorporates elements from existing compositions. The programme takes place in different parts of the University of Oulu Botanical Gardens, allowing the sounds of the garden to become part of the experience. The Bug Academy
Come and meet little bugs and great researchers! The bug academy will teach you about the lives of creepy-crawlies and insect research. Would you like to see the different developmental stages of ants, pupae of butterflies, or bumblebees having a ball in the hall? How do we study the behaviour, ecology, genome and evolution of insects? Meet scientists and live bugs: bumble bees, ants and butterflies, and drop by the bug-drawing point to do some art! Visit a Beehive!
Have you ever wondered what life is like inside a bee nest? Beekeepers will be happy to introduce you to beekeeping and honey. If the conditions are right, you can also take a look into what's buzzing inside a real beehive through our special glass-walled bee nest. The beekeepers will tell you more about it and answer any questions related. You can also taste and buy honey made by our bees. You can find us in the lobby of the botanical gardens. Making Biochar
Did you know that the "waste" twigs and brush produced during yard cleanup or landscape clearing can be turned into biochar—an excellent soil amendment? Thanks to its porous structure, biochar effectively absorbs and retains water and nutrients, while also providing a habitat for beneficial soil microorganisms. When added to garden soil, for example, it can act as a kind of backup power source for plants, helping to reduce the need for watering. The carbon in the branches is locked into a very stable form in biochar and can remain in the soil for hundreds of years without breaking down—keeping it out of the atmosphere. So, making biochar is also a small everyday climate action! A hands-on workshop will demonstrate how to make biochar from brushwood using a cone kiln and a retort. The workshop will also offer information on how biochar can be used as a soil conditioner in, for example, home gardens. The event is organized by the Hiilestä on moneksi (The Era of Biochar) project and the Association for Rural Culture and Education (Maaseudun Sivistysliitto) in collaboration with the Botanical Garden. Nature Sounds and How to Find Them
Step into a room filled with the sounds of nature—wind, insects, birds, and nocturnal life. The soundscape is alive and responsive to your presence. As you move through the space, you will notice the environment changing. Sounds appear, shift, and sometimes disappear again. Energy from the Atom – Try a Nuclear Power Plant Simulator
Nuclear energy is an important part of today's debate on our energy future, and the university, through its research and education activities, it is an active contributor and facilitator of this conversation. In this interactive and educational demonstration, you can explore the inner workings of the next generation nuclear reactors. Through the use of a simulator, you get to see how the nuclear fuel is transformed in electricity and how such a process it is controlled. The workshop offers 4 guided demonstrations starting at 17.15, 18.15, 19.15 ja 20.15. Outside of demonstrations, the simulators are freely available, and the experts will answer any of your questions regarding the past, the present, and the prospective future of the energy industry. Superman Vision: How 6G-Powered Radio Imaging Lets You See Through
Step into the future of wireless technology with this live demonstration from the Radio Engineering Group of University of Oulu! Using high-frequency (sub-THz) radio waves, our setup reveals how future 6G networks will "see" through solid materials to detect hidden objects. Visitors can peer inside sealed cardboard boxes via real-time radio wave attenuation, all powered by a robotic system operating behind the scenes. Robots Helping People in Everyday Life
You've probably seen a robot vacuuming, mowing a lawn, or delivering groceries? Robotics is already part of our everyday lives, and the next step in its development is happening right now. Come and meet the humanoid robot Arska, who can wave, shake hands and dance – but can you have a chat with it? We study what kind of interaction people expect from a robot, and how humans and robots can work together naturally. You'll also get to see how field robots and drones measure their surroundings using sensors and cameras, and how the collected data is used to build a digital twin – a virtual copy of a real-life environment.TF136–137

Ever wondered what’s hidden inside your phone, car, bike or even a giant wind turbine? At Researchers’ Night with Oulu Mining School, come follow minerals on their amazing journey, from deep inside the Earth all the way into the useful things we use every day! Meet the copper that carries electricity, iron and nickel that makes cars and bikes, rare-earth minerals that help wind turbines power our homes, and even the lithium that keeps your laptop and phone batteries running. This multisensory exhibition features a collection of shadow boxes created as part of an arts based PhD project on local childhood secret places. Each box hides a small world: treehouses, forest dens, imaginary kingdoms, and hiding spots. Through sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, these secret spaces come alive. Peek inside, linger awhile, and see what memories surface, perhaps even echoes of secret places you once knew and the friends, pets, toys, or books that helped make these places possible! What happens when we die? These are some of the questions children themselves have asked in the Small Matters research project, and their questions are at the centre of everything we do. Vesicles Everywhere – In Nature, Food and the Human Body
Did you know that tiny messengers called extracellular vesicles can be found in nature, in food, and even in our own bodies? In this workshop, you’ll get to explore what kinds of vesicles can be found in, for example, the air, the environment, spruce trees, berries, milk and sweat – and why they are being studied. You’ll get a hands-on introduction to the research through a variety of interactive activities and research examples. You can also see some of the equipment and methods used in research. Welcome to the University of Oulu LUMA Centre’s Science and Math Station! At our station, you can explore, experiment with and marvel at phenomena in mathematics and the natural sciences in a fun and engaging way. In this workshop, you can explore how drones can be used to measure forests, support search and rescue operations, monitor the environment, detect faults and create 3D models. Oamk’s Arctic Aviation Solutions -research programme showcases how drone and sensor technologies can help us see our environment from a new perspective. At the workshop, you can explore a drone simulator, aerial measurement data, scanned 3D models, and the potential of thermal cameras for detecting faults, anomalies and heat loss. Safe Spaces
Safe Spaces is a light art project developed by the ARTiFAB project in collaboration with artist Shima Salehi, and Oulu city youth workshops, Vamos Oulu and Kulttuurivoimala. The project invited participants to reflect on what safety means to them and to explore the places, people, objects, and moments that bring comfort, calm, and a sense of belonging. Through digital fabrication such as 2D design, laser cutting, electronics and programming, participants transformed their personal ideas of safety into layered artworks. The exhibition brings these individual works together, creating a shared reflection on safety, belonging, creativity, and physical and emotional spaces where we feel at home. At 6:25 PM, Let’s Improvise! – an improvisational theatre session by Impronium, the improvisation group of Oulu University Student Theatre, with science and research as its theme. HIDASTUS: A participatory Space for Lingering
Research unfolds in numerous ways, and knowing takes place at differing rhythms. Knowing and researching can also take many forms—sometimes appearing slow, almost like a quiet suspension of activity within ongoing processes. Although research findings and moments of insight often receive the greatest attention, much of research takes shape slowly as thoughts and ideas unfold and take shape. Research and thinking at the threshold of the new and uncertain therefore calls for time, for slowing down, and for lingering. In the HIDASTUS workshop, we invite participants to attune to the slow forms and moments of research and thinking together with researchers and alongside them. What does slowing down and lingering do and make possible in research, knowing, and thinking? What do they attune us to notice, what kinds of thought do they set in motion, and how do they open space for approaching things from new angles? In the workshop, you will encounter glimpses of the lingering modes of research, peer into the often unseen and quietly modest moments of the research process, and experiment with what slowing down looks and feels like as an embodied and relational practice. The workshop is organised by a group of researchers in gender studies, sociology, and youth research, whose work attends to diverse, creative, and often slow ways of knowing and researching. The cloud chamber is a detector for ionizing radiation. It allows the visualization of ionizing radiation present in the environment, making it visible to the human eye. The cloud chamber does not produce ionizing radiation; it merely illustrates the background radiation already present around us in a way that can be seen. Step into the world of intelligent technology in our interactive and diverse workshop! Explore artificial intelligence through hands-on activities and experiments. Try to guess whether images or texts were created by humans or AI, explore families' everyday digital dilemmas through a game, or vote with stickers on everyday situations where AI might (or might not) be trusted to make decisions. Be a Scientist: Sort, Separate, Create Energy!
A membrane is a special selective barrier—it lets some things pass through while blocking others. This is how scientists can separate mixtures into different parts or keep groups of materials together. Visitors can explore how we separate useful materials and create clean energy. Try sorting real rocks to find valuable green minerals, just like in the first step of making materials for batteries and wind turbines. Discover how special filters called membranes are made and used to separate liquids, clean water, and even remove colors. You can watch videos, try simple filtration, and see real scientific devices. Finally, play a fun computer game where you control how fresh and salty water mix to produce electricity. Boost Your Garden With Biochar!
Do you recognize the valuable material in your garden? Come and discover your raw material, which can be used to make valuable products efficiently and environmentally friendly. The workshop will introduce the production of bio-based carbons, and you can try them in barley growing. You will find out more about the valuable recyclable materials in your garden and how to produce a carbon suitable for soil improvement. Space Weather
Come and explore near-Earth space and discover how the Sun’s activity affects our environment! The Sun’s magnetic activity, its 11-year cycle, and various solar eruptions influence near-Earth space, the atmosphere, and even our climate. Just as we talk about weather and climate on Earth, these changes are referred to as space weather and space climate. In the workshop, visitors can learn about the electrical phenomena that shape the space environment, changes in solar activity and their effects, the Northern Lights, and how the Sun’s activity can affect our weather and, ultimately, even our energy consumption. At the space weather display, you can follow current space conditions, including solar and auroral activity. Gas and Vortices – Explore the Flows of Molten Steel
Come and see impressive swirls and bubbling action in water models that simulate steelmaking processes. The water models are used to study flow phenomena in steelmaking that cannot be observed inside molten metal at an actual plant. At the same time, you’ll get a glimpse into researchers’ everyday work in the experimental hall and have a chance to examine the results.

Potnapekka minitrain operates free of charge between campus 2T entrance and garden non-stop from 5 to 9 pm.
The bus stop is located on Erkki Koiso-Kanttilan katu in front of entrance 2T. The bus stop at Linnanmaa's main entrance 2T is called University. Bus schedules on the website of public transport in Oulu.
There is plenty of room for bicycle parking in the area.
Car parking is free and free of charge in the P-area between Erkki Koiso-Kanttilan katu and Yliopistokatu (P1 and P2) on the day of the event at 4 to 10 pm. Map of Linnanmaa (PDF)

The Linnanmaa campus area of the University of Oulu is very functional in terms of accessibility. In addition, attention has been given to accessibility through various arrangements (see Linnanmaa campus map, pdf). There is an unobstructed passage through main door 2T to the event. Accessible toilets can be found e.g. near the R entrance.

Too much noise, hustle, and bustle? If you wish, you can retreat for a moment of silence in Tellus Nest.
