Hybrid Intelligence researchers Haoyu Chen and Andy Nguyen secure major funding from Research Council of Finland

The academy research fellowship funding is intended for talented early-career researchers who have advanced rapidly in their careers and are internationally networked, and who conduct scientifically high-quality, impactful, and innovative research. Hybrid Intelligence programme´s Tenure Track Assistant Professors received funding for their work in June 2025.

The research funded was Towards Moravec's Paradox: Decoding Human Spontaneous Behaviors for Sentient AI from Cognitive Aspects.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown remarkable prowess in various areas, yet it still struggles to replicate the intuitive intelligence of animals like dogs, which is known as Moravec's Paradox. This highlight presents that tasks humans find effortless, such as perception and intuition, are deeply rooted in billions of years of evolution and remain a significant challenge for AI systems. This project will bring AI scientists, cognitive scientists, and behavioral ecologists together, building new AI-driven models to understand human behaviors, based on a holistic and transformative approach rooted in cognitive and evolutionary aspects. This research will inspire groundbreaking collaborations across AI, neuroscience, cognitive science, and linguistics. The goal is to develop next-generation AI systems akin to animals like cats and dogs, capable of inherently interacting with humans with affection in a dynamic and context-aware manner, which we call sentient intelligence.

Hybrid Intelligence Tenure Track Assistant Professor Andy Nguyen is a Docent in Applied AI and his research focuses on Educational Technology; Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education in Learning and Learning Processes unit, Faculty of Education and Psychology, at the University of Oulu.
The project Human-AI Shared Regulation of Learning: Preparing Higher Education Students to Learn and Work with AI (HAI-Learning) aims to address an urgent need while offering a theoretical breakthrough in understanding how humans and AI agents can mutually regulate learning processes. By examining and supporting shared regulations between learners and AI, the project seeks to inform pedagogical practices and socio-technical system design. Ultimately, it contributes to preparing higher education students for future workforce demands, ensuring their readiness to engage with AI in ways that enhance learning and promote broader societal impact.
This significant achievement highlights the excellence of our research community and strengthens the position of our Hybrid Intelligence program at the forefront of future AI-based solutions for well-being and quality of life.
