University of Oulu honours the memory of its alumnus, President Martti Ahtisaari

President Martti Ahtisaari passed away on Monday, October 16th, as reported by the Office of the President of the Republic of Finland. Ahtisaari was 86 years old at the time of his death.

President Martti Ahtisaari served as the President of the Republic of Finland from 1994 to 2000, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008. Throughout his career, he held numerous significant international positions.

President Martti Ahtisaari graduated as a teacher from the University of Oulu in 1959. Following his graduation, he worked as a teacher in Oulu 1959-1960. In 1989, Ahtisaari was conferred an honorary doctorate in educational sciences by the University of Oulu.

On April 25, 2008, President Martti Ahtisaari inaugurated an institute bearing his name at the Oulu University Business School. The institute naturally focuses on key aspects of President Ahtisaari's life's work, particularly sustainable international business within the framework of the global economy.

"I promised to get involved if the institute is part of normal operations and if it adds value to the planned projects. I am pleased that the University of Oulu has taken a step forward in the field of economics," he stated during the institute's opening ceremony.

The University of Oulu extends its condolences to the family and expresses gratitude to President Martti Ahtisaari for his work on behalf of the university.

The university is flying flags at half-mast for Martti Ahtisaari on 16 October, 2023.
