We are offering a new course on intersectional gender equality and diversity

This course has a perfect mix of theory, practice, and activism!

417144P Gender equality as a diverse phenomenon, 5 ECTS

In the course, the latest research concerning gender equality and diversity will be studied. The course also introduces the organizations, regulations and practices of gender equality and diversity work on national, Nordic and EU-level. Theoretical knowledge will be applied to practice by familiarizing oneself with different gender equality and diversity projects as well as with educational institutes’ and workplaces’ Gender Equality Plans. As a final course work, alternatively to an essay it is encouraged to plan and implement your own mini gender equality project or pilot initiative. Lecturers come from various universities and Gender Equality organizations.

The course information

The course is held online on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10–12 o’clock Finnish time (at 9–11 o’clock SWE/NOR time). Lectures will be recorded and viewable afterwards. The course starts 11th April with an Introduction lecture. The course is held in English. Please register for the course by 11.4.2023. After the registration, students will receive an information letter providing practicalities for entering the course’s Moodle-space and Zoom-link to the online lectures.

The course has synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. It consists of two-hour lectures (total 11x2h) by ten experts. In addition to the lectures, course assignments include reading course literature and active participation in the course’s discussion area in Moodle after each lecture. The final assignment is a 10-page report prepared in pairs on participating in local equality and diversity action. Prior to the final assignment, each pair will submit 1 page draft for feedback by 4th May. The deadline for the report is 30.5.2023. The course evaluation and study credits will be provided by 22.6.2023.

The course is organized by the University of Oulu and is available for all interested participants from other Universities. In the University of Oulu, the course is part of Gender studies and Sustainable Development minors: 417144P Gender equality as a diverse phenomenon.

RESET (Redesigning equality and scientific excellence together)

RESET is a Coordination and support action funded by the European Union under the Horizon2020 programme, and the call “H2020-SwafS-2020-1”. RESET involves seven large multidisciplinary universities from all over Europe (University of Bordeaux, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Łódź, University of Porto, Ruhr-University Bochum, University of Oulu, Sciences Po Paris) and aims to address the challenge of Gender Equality in Research Institutions in a diversity perspective, with the objective to design and implement a user-centered, impact-driven and inclusive vision of scientific excellence. The project will combine an intersectional approach to gender equality with the collective intelligence fostered and harvested through the co-design of the Gender Equality Plans (GEPs).
