Project description
The world is changing rapidly. With artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and social robots becoming more common, today's children will grow up in a digital world that is vastly different from today. At the same time, global challenges like climate change, inequality, and discrimination continue to affect their lives. The TAKEOVER project aims to prepare children for this future—not just as passive users of technology but as active creators and change-makers.
Led by researcher Netta Iivari, TAKEOVER explores how children can develop transformative agency—the ability to think critically about technology, imagine alternative futures, and take action to improve society. The project focuses on empowering children to challenge existing systems, ask difficult questions, and use technology to tackle real-world problems.
What Will the Project Do?
TAKEOVER will work with school children (ages 12–16) over several years, engaging them in hands-on design projects using AI, VR, and social robots. Instead of just learning how to use these technologies, children will explore their ethical and social impacts. Through workshops, discussions, and creative activities, they will:
- Analyze real-world problems like climate change, gender inequality, and bullying.
- Envision better futures by imagining how technology could be used for good.
- Design and experiment with new ideas, such as interactive AI tools or VR experiences that promote social justice.
- Take action by raising awareness, mobilizing their communities, and influencing decision-makers.
Why Does This Matter?
Many programs focus on teaching children how to code, but fewer encourage them to use their skills for social change. TAKEOVER goes beyond basic tech education by integrating critical thinking, ethics, and activism into children's learning experiences. The project will help children see themselves as active participants in shaping technology, rather than just consumers.
This initiative also contributes to global goals for sustainability, equity, and digital responsibility. By collaborating with schools, researchers, and policymakers, TAKEOVER aims to influence education and inspire new ways of thinking about technology’s role in society.
In the long run, TAKEOVER hopes to spark a new generation of young leaders who can use technology to build a fairer, more inclusive world.
