Oulujoki – A Cultural Tourism Route from the Oulujoki River to the World

The project responds to the need to develop the cultural offerings of the Oulujoki River region into a coherent and internationally appealing cultural tourism route. It brings together stakeholders and permanent cultural content from two regions, creating a lasting legacy of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture year. The project is developing a cultural tourism route from Kuhmo to Oulu. The route brings together the cultural attractions, events and landscapes of the Oulujoki River region into an easily accessible and engaging experience.

Project description

The project content is aimed particularly at international travellers interested in slow tourism, nature and local culture. A particular strength of the project is the new and deepened cooperation between the two regions of Kainuu and North Ostrobothnia.

This cross-regional approach enables the development of a broad and long-term network involving businesses, cultural and tourism organisations, and municipalities.

The aim is to create a cross-sectoral cultural tourism ecosystem that strengthens the expertise of the participating organisations and improves their economic operating conditions. The tourism route will be built around the region’s authentic and long-established cultural experiences and events, rooted in everyday life along the Oulujoki River, its history and its connection with nature.

The resulting cultural tourism route will not be a separate, one-off initiative, but a permanent and easily marketable entity that evolves together with local communities.

The project is coordinated by Oulun Kulttuuritapahtumayhdistys ry (the Oulu Cultural Events Association), with the University of Oulu Kerttu Saalasti Institute and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK) as project partners.
