Project description

The Phantom Menace project aims to develop solutions to the challenges facing the region through multidisciplinary collaboration. This multidisciplinary collaboration will focus on medicine, biotechnology and engineering. The project is implemented by the Kerttu Saalasti Institute's Future Manufacturing Technologies (FMT) research group and the Oulu Functional Neuroimaging (OFNI) of the Faculty of Medicine.

The concrete objectives of the project are to develop new knowledge and new solutions for the future study of patient phenomena in non-living artificial structures, thus reducing the use of laboratory animals and facilitating the clinical research phase. The technical objective of the project is to print very small lattice structures and study their properties, and to exploit biomimicry in engineered structures. The aim is also to support the commercialisation of the results, opening up the possibility of significant new business opportunities.

The Phantom Menace project will be implemented during the period 1.4.2025 – 31.3.2028 and the total budget is 820 130 €. The project has been funded by the EU's ERDF The Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021–2027 programme (TL 1 Innovative Finland/1.1 Improving research and innovation capacities and the introduction of advanced technologies) and the funding has been granted by the Council of Oulu Region. The project is also funded by Silention Oy and Finnadvance Oy.
