RESHAPE — Reshaping agencies in AI-mediated group collaboration

RESHAPE

RESHAPE project investigates how agencies are taking new forms in human-AI collaboration. We focus specifically on the contexts of collaborative learning, with the aim of identifying how interactions become mediated by AI technology.
We take a micro-ecological approach to identify new practices and interactions mediated by AI across the individual, collaborative, and systemic layers. Our research follows how grounded ethics are both confronted and renewed in AI-mediated interaction.
The RESHAPE project is funded by the Research Council of Finland 2026-2029.

Project description

The project focuses on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) mediated collaborative learning in small groups. Collaboration is examined as a beneficial context to learn to reflect on the value and trustworthiness of information and actions with GenAI. The project studies how GenAI is used in small-group collaboration, capabilities are challenged and developed, and grounded ethics are confronted and renewed in AI-mediated interaction. This offers new conceptualizations of agencies, both human and non-human, in learning with GenAI. We employ a micro-ecological approach to study learning with AI across levels, from capabilities and agency to learning design and institutional ecosystems. An account of the dynamic and creative interactions is built across three stages of data collection and analysis on GenAI-mediated processes, self-evaluations, group and stakeholder reflections. The project creates solutions for training sustainable human-AI co-creation practices in education and work.
