Research assessment

Universities Act provides that universities must evaluate their research activities. The university level Research Assessment Excercise (RAE) is performed every sixth year as an international scientific peer review. The multidisciplinary focus institutes of the university are evaluated by international expert panels every 4th year.

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) by the University of Oulu was carried out in 2019-2020. The international panels of experts are expected to complete their assessment report in the summer of 2021.

The field-specific scientific panels assess the actual and future impact of the research, for example, based on bibliometric analyzes, self-assessments, research plans, and interviews. The RAE2020 assessment targets all research units at the faculties of the University of Oulu, the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, the Kajaani University Consortium and the Kerttu Saalasti Institute.

The previous RAE evaluation at the University of Oulu was carried out in 2012 – 2014 (RAE2013). The results were published in January 2014.  From 49 research communities and over 2100 persons, participating in RAE2013 evaluation, 13 outstanding and nine excellent Research Communities were recognized.
