Research group description
The Cosmic Rays Group is affiliated with the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit andare Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory. The main research topics include (but are not limited to) the variability of cosmic rays (galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles), their atmospheric effects, space climate phenomena, and solar activity.
The group operates ground-based cosmic-ray detectors: a 9NM64 neutron monitor and a muon telescope in Oulu (Finland), since 1964, and a paired mini-NM at Concordia Station (Antarctica) since 2015.
The group has leading expertise in numerical modelling of cosmic rays and their transport and interactions in the heliosphere, magnetosphere and atmosphere. This includes state-of-the-art models of the CRAC (Cosmic Rays Atmospheric Cascade) family, and an OTSO (Open-source geomagneToSphere prOpagation tool).
