Research group description
Oulu brain tumor research group focuses on improving the treatment of brain tumors. Novel MRI methods are used to improve the diagnosis of brain tumors and to help the neurosurgeons in planning of the tumor resections. Brain tumor biological behavior is investigated and new potential tumor biomarkers are studied. The main goal is to improve the patient's prognosis together with patient’s functionality and quality of life using modern research methods and technologies.
Group leader Associate Professor Niina Salokorpi
The goal of our magnetic resonance imaging study of brain tumor patients is to improve the diagnosis of brain tumors, to optimize the targeting of the sample taken from the tumor, and to help determine safe resection limits in tumors infiltrating normal tissue. In addition to this, we are looking for methods enabling the prediction of the biological behavior of the tumor as well as the likely location of recurrence.
In addition to imaging studies, we are also looking for biomarkers from e.g. saliva and sweat samples to enable faster and non-invasive accurate diagnosis of brain tumors. Monitoring of brain tumors using these biomarkers could also be possible in the future.
We strive to improve the entire treatment path of a brain tumor patient, and we do close collaboration with other clinics part of the treatment path. This enables the patient's follow-up also during the possible radiation and chemotherapy treatments. The patients' quality of life and functionality are also monitored and considered in the optimization of treatments.
