Doctoral Education Committees
The Doctoral Education Committee handles issues ranging from admission to accepting the doctoral thesis. Each doctoral researcher in the University of Oulu belongs to one of the four doctoral programmes and the corresponding Doctoral Education Committee.
Doctoral Education Committee:
- Leads the doctoral programme training
- Accepts degree requirements proposed by the degree programmes
- Is responsible for doctoral student selections –Numbers, criteria for admission, evaluation of applications
- Grants permissions to defend the doctoral theses
- Approves and grades the doctoral theses
Chair of Doctoral Education Committee:
- Accepts new doctoral researchers to take the degree
- Issues certificates of doctoral degrees
- Appoints the pre-examiners, opponent and custos
- Approves changes of supervisors and appoints additional supervisors
- Appoints follow-up group members
The members of Doctoral Education Committees represent different disciplines. They usually also act as directors of the doctoral degree programmes.

Director of the Doctoral Programme, appointed by the Vice Rector, is responsible for the planning, implementation, and quality management of the doctoral programme’s education. Director regularly consults representatives of the faculty to support the development of the programme. The duties of the Director of the Doctoral Programme are defined in more detail in a separate guideline.
