Optional general and transferrable skills courses

The Graduate School organises general and transferable skills courses to support the doctoral researcher's working life skills. Note that many of the courses are implemented both in Finnish and in English. Please see the detailed course descriptions in the study guide.

Research methods and responsibility

• Responsible researcher’s toolkit (2 ECTS)
• Introduction to data visualisation (1 ECTS)
• Writing Research Grant Proposals (1 ECTS)
• Scenario planning as a futures research method (3 ECTS)
• Introduction to interdisciplinarity (2 ECTS)

Communication skills

Innovation and commercialization

• Business Development for Researchers (2 ECTS)
• Utilisation of Patent Databases in Research (0.5 ECTS)
• IP Rights and Research (0.5 ECTS)
• Get to know copyrights! (0.5 ECTS)
• Get to know agreements (0,5-1 op)
• Commercialization of research results (0,5 ECTS)
• Practical Commercialization of Research Results (0,5 ECTS
• Intellectual Property Rights in Teaching and Research (0,5 ECTS)
• Create – Protect – Innovate: Bringing ideas to market (Entry level) (3 ECTS)

Working life skills

• Project Management (0.5-3 ECTS)
• Future PhD: Designing an expert career (2 ECTS)
• Administrative tasks (1 ECTS)
  • Student representative in administration, UniOGS management group or Doctoral Training Committee, active participation at least 4 times /year (1 credit / year, for a maximum of 4 years).

Pedagogy studies

• Basics of University Pedagogy for Doctoral Students (2 ECTS)

Language studies

• You can include language courses in the optional general and transferable skills studies. The Language and Communication Unit organizes Finnish courses for international students.

The enrollment into general and transferable skills courses is done in Peppi system. See instructions for enrolling to courses in Peppi wiki page. You can also search for a course in Peppi by using a course code or name of the course. Note that there is a limited number of participants for many of the courses, so inform cancellation of participation on time!

The doctoral degree programme determines the number of credits of general and transferable skills courses that can be included into your doctoral degree.
