  • can communicate their research expertly and clearly to both scientific and wider audiences.
  • acquires generic skills needed in working life, such as project management, collaboration, career planning, and the ability to work in interdisciplinary and international environments.
  • acts responsibly in demanding expert, research, and development positions, both in academia and other sectors.
  • actively participates in interdisciplinary dialogue and understand the societal impact of their research.

Doctoral thesis

The doctoral thesis is the outcome of scientific research. The doctoral researcher and their supervisor(s) are jointly responsible for defining the topic and content of the doctoral thesis so that it can be completed within the target time (3-4 years)

The doctoral thesis must always produce new scientific knowledge. The doctoral researcher is expected to demonstrate in-depth expertise in their field, critical thinking, and mastery of research methods and their appropriate application. The presented results must be well-founded, scientifically convincing, and ethically sound. The evaluation of doctoral thesis is based on criteria pre-defined by the University of Oulu Graduate School.

You can find more information about the examination and the approval of doctoral thesis on the page "Final stages of doctoral degree". See also the doctoral thesis requirements.

Doctoral studies

Doctoral studies support the researcher’s career, research work, and professional skills.

Doctoral studies are arranged by the Graduate School, Doctoral Programmes and doctoral degree programmes within them, as well as national and international doctoral training networks. The studies are planned with the supervisor at the beginning of doctoral training to support research work and the skills needs of the doctoral researcher.
