Thesis requirements

The doctoral thesis forms the academic basis of the doctoral degree and is a key part of the degree requirements. The University of Oulu Graduate School has general thesis requirements, and doctoral degree programmes have their own field-specific requirements.

What is a doctoral thesis?

The objectives of scientific and artistic postgraduate education and the completion of the doctoral degree are provided by the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004, Amendment 1039/2013; 21§ and 22§).

The thesis must demonstrate the doctoral researcher’s ability to independently and critically apply scientific research methods and to generate new scientific knowledge. Depending on the field, the thesis may be a compilation of scientific publications or a monograph. The scope of the doctoral thesis must be planned so that completion the doctoral degree is feasible within 3–4 years of full-time work.

The eligibility of the thesis is assessed in several stages. The supervisor evaluates whether the thesis is ready for pre-examination. The pre-examiners and the opponent(s) evaluate the adequacy of the work as a thesis based on the scientific content. Doctoral Programme Committee grants permission to defend based on the pre-examination statements, and approves and grades the doctoral thesis.

Field-specific requirements

See below for more detailed field-specific thesis requirements and read carefully the requirements concerning your field. To ensure that your doctoral training is well-planned, thesis requirements must be taken into account from the early stages of your research.
