Alexandra Middleton

Alexandra Middleton is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Oulu. Her research focuses on Arctic governance, sustainable development, science diplomacy, responsible resource development, the role of Indigenous knowledge in decision-making and socio-economic transformation in polar regions. She works across disciplinary boundaries to examine how environmental, economic, social, and geopolitical changes are shaping the future of the Arctic.

Alexandra currently serves as Arctic Six Chair, advancing international collaboration on Arctic sustainability and regional development. She is a Fulbright Arctic Initiative Fellow (2024-2026) with Harvard Arctic Initiative affiliation and collaborates with international partners.

She is a Lead of the UArctic Thematic Network on Polar Research Cooperation and Diplomacy, which promotes international research cooperation and diplomacy across polar regions. In addition, she served as Citizen Science Ambassador for Finland, supporting inclusive approaches to knowledge production and public engagement in research.

Her work bridges academia, policy, and practice. In recognition of her contributions to polar research and international cooperation, she has been featured among the 100 Polar Women and nominated for the Shackleton Medal for the Protection of the Polar Regions.

Alexandra has also contributed to the internationally recognized Arctic Index North initiative. She regularly communicates research findings to wider audiences and delivered a TEDxOulu talk exploring perceptions of the Arctic and the importance of understanding its human dimension
