I am a researcher in lifecourse health. I serve as Professor of Lifecourse Medicine at University of Oulu and also hold affiliations at Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL, Future Finland Birth Cohort) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.

I have been working over 25 years on Developmental Origins of Health and Disease framework and in particular focused on the health and well-being of children and adults born preterm in high and low resource settings. Our research combines in-depth studies of mechanisms underlying early life programming of lifelong health in clinical and population birth cohorts (including the Northern Finland Birth Cohort) with lifelong health studies in whole-population registers.

Research interests

  • preterm birth, gestational diabetes and other pregnancy conditions from a lifecourse perspective
  • developmental origins of health and disease
  • high and low resource settings
