Heli Yu

Heli Yu is a postdoctoral researcher in the Hydrosystems Engineering and Management (HEM) research group at the Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering (WE3) research unit, University of Oulu, working within the Digital Waters (DIWA) Flagship. His work currently focuses on modelling river ice processes under natural, regulated and changing-climate conditions under the supervision of Professor Ali Torabi Haghighi. The overall aim is to develop and refine a modelling approach for river ice processes based on an existing open-source hydrodynamic model, applying it to specific river systems and research questions in Finland, and extending its applicability to other river systems worldwide.

He received his PhD in Hydroscience and Hydraulic Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan, where he worked on 3D numerical simulation of flow and sediment transport around spur dikes in meandering streams considering bank erosion using OpenFOAM. Before that, he obtained a master’s degree in Hydraulics and River Dynamics from Sichuan University, focusing on simulating riverbed evolution in a fluctuating backwater area, and a bachelor’s degree in Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering from Wuhan University, China.
