International top research
In the University of Oulu, we participate in solving global problems with our cutting-edge research. Multidisciplinary research is conducted in five focus areas and new research openings are sought particularly at interdisciplinary interfaces. The basis for applied multidisciplinary research is created by long-term basic research.
Our research strengths relate to the creation and understanding of digital future, and Arctic research. Our 6G researchers are pioneering the development of future wireless technologies. Arctic research, education and collaboration encompass all of our research fields.
Interdisciplinary research community
The research units of our eight faculties form a scientific community with unique interdisciplinary strengths. Many of our research units represent the international top in their respective fields.
Open and responsible research
We want to contribute to the impact of science in society. Our determined Programme of Responsible Research helps us to promote open utilization of knowledge both in scientific research and in society.

We bring our research findings and knowledge available to different actors in society. We actively promote the development and deployment of research-driven innovations and applications.
Research-based startup companies
Over 60 research-based companies have emerged from the University of Oulu in the past fifteen years.

Our researchers publish about 3500 publications each year. The Oulun yliopisto tutkii database (SoleCRIS) contains information on the publications of experts at the University of Oulu.
