Utilizing Digital Games to Increase Physical Activity

In his dissertation Luoto has investigated the use of digital games' features to enhance physical activity and well-being. The study has identified persuasive features of games that can be leveraged to increase players' physical activity.

At the heart of the research are so-called "exergames," such as Clans of Oulu developed in the MOPO project and the more widely known commercial game Ingress Prime. Such games are played by moving in the real environment, sometimes even in challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions. Elements related to competition, cooperation, and social interaction within the games were highlighted as factors motivating players.

The research data consisted of observations, interviews, and survey responses from players, in addition to several games.
